OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/29/2026, Broward Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the Racquet Club apartment complex in the 800 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard after reports that Kevin Dominick Almonte was holding knives and threatening residents. According to investigators, Almonte retreated into an apartment and locked himself inside when deputies arrived. Police stated that he also made threats about having firearms, propane tanks, and bombs inside the residence, prompting the evacuation of nearby residents.

BSO deployed SWAT, K-9, and Violent Crimes units and spent several hours attempting to communicate with Almonte and persuade him to exit the apartment. An arrest warrant was obtained during the standoff. Police stated that Almonte eventually exited while holding knives and moved toward deputies. A deputy opened fire, striking him.
Almonte was transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His mother later told reporters that he had mental health issues and that the incident began after an argument with a neighbor. She disputed the use of deadly force, stating that her son did not have a firearm. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting the investigation.
