OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 06/01/2026, deputies with the Polk County Sheriff's Office and members of the U.S. Marshals Service went to a residence in the 5700 block of Linden Court to serve a criminal mischief warrant and a court ordered mental health commitment order on Austin D. Mark, 44. Police stated that Mark locked himself inside a garage and refused to surrender. Officers spent several hours attempting to negotiate with him. Police stated that when officers breached the garage, Mark fired multiple rounds, striking a deputy in the hand. Officers opened fire. During the standoff, a fire started inside the garage. After firefighters extinguished the fire, Mark was found dead inside. Authorities later identified him as Austin D. Mark. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting.
