OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 06/04/2026, a Callaway County Sheriff's deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation on State Road E near County Road 271. The driver, Joseph G. Fennewald, fled and led deputies on a pursuit across multiple state and county roads. The vehicle stopped in the front yard of a residence on State Road E. Fennewald exited the vehicle, entered a nearby house, then emerged carrying a rifle and ran into a wooded area. Deputies and Missouri State Highway Patrol personnel established a perimeter and attempted to take him into custody. At approximately 7:49 p.m., officers heard a single gunshot from within the woods. During the incident, deputies learned Fennewald was experiencing mental health concerns. Crisis Intervention Team personnel and negotiators attempted to contact him but were unsuccessful. Using FLIR technology, search teams later located Fennewald in the wooded area. He was found dead at approximately 11:17 p.m. Police reported that no officers fired any shots during the incident.
