On 06/04/2026, Richland County Sheriff's deputies responded to multiple reports of homes and vehicles being struck by gunfire in the Summit area of Columbia, including incidents on Sagamare Road and Spring Oak Drive. Deputies and K-9 units tracked possible suspects into the area of Legends Oaks Drive. According to the Sheriff's Department, deputies encountered several individuals in a backyard who began firing at them with rifles and pistols. Deputies returned fire while seeking cover. One person was detained and Qwa’Maurie A. Deaver, 18, was fatally shot. Sheriff Leon Lott stated that deputies were confronted with heavy gunfire and that multiple suspects may have been involved. Investigators reported that the earlier shootings and the encounter with deputies were believed to be related. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is expected to review the deputy-involved shooting.
