OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 06/08/2026, Carbon County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a report of an armed man in Baggs. According to the sheriff's office, the man opened fire on the first responding deputy, striking him multiple times. The suspect fled in a small truck, and additional Carbon County deputies and Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers pursued him north on Wyoming Highway 789. During the pursuit, police reported that the suspect again fired at pursuing officers, including striking a Wyoming Highway Patrol vehicle. The pursuit ended after the truck left the roadway and came to a stop. The suspect was found dead at the scene from a gunshot wound. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased or specified whether the fatal gunshot was self-inflicted or fired by law enforcement. The wounded deputy was airlifted to a hospital in Colorado. The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation.
