OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 06/12/2026, Midland police, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and other law enforcement agencies responded to an active shooter incident after Victor Mata Villarreal opened fire on bystanders and responding officers. Villarreal barricaded himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic, where law enforcement established a perimeter and conducted an approximately two-hour standoff. After officers entered the building, they found Villarreal dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident occurred while authorities were attempting to take him into custody following the mass shooting and an earlier attempted capital murder of a peace officer. The Texas Rangers are investigating.
