On 06/10/2026, members of the United States Marshals Service attempted to serve an arrest warrant on Michael Zurek in the 500 block of North Green Street in Ottumwa. During the encounter, a U.S. Marshal discharged a firearm, striking Zurek. Zurek died at the scene. No law enforcement officers were injured. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Ottumwa Police Department are investigating the shooting. The deputy who fired the weapon was placed on administrative leave in accordance with U.S. Marshals Service policy.
