On 06/13/2026, Philadelphia police officers responded to reports of a vehicle that had been struck by gunfire near the intersection of 54th Street and Arlington Street in the Wynnefield neighborhood. While officers were establishing a crime scene, they encountered 57-year-old Eric Franks, who police said became involved in a confrontation with officers. According to police, Franks shoved a sergeant as officers attempted to explain the crime scene, and officers then attempted to detain him. Police stated that Franks produced a handgun and fired at officers, striking three of them. Four officers returned fire, striking Franks in the chest and leg. Franks was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Three officers were hospitalized in stable condition. Police recovered a 9mm handgun from the scene. The shooting remains under investigation.
