OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 06/08/2026, a Rialto Police Department officer attempted to stop a vehicle after observing it stopped on the wrong side of the roadway near Cedar Avenue and Bohnert Avenue. The driver did not stop and continued driving, leading officers on a pursuit. Less than two minutes later, the fleeing vehicle was traveling southbound on Locust Avenue at a high rate of speed when it ran a red light at Renaissance Parkway and collided with a vehicle driven by 74-year-old Oscar Torres. According to police, the pursuing officer was a significant distance behind the fleeing vehicle and did not witness the collision. Officers provided medical aid until firefighters arrived, but Torres was pronounced dead at the scene. The fleeing driver, identified as 25-year-old Angel Reyes of Hemet, was critically injured and arrested on suspicion of murder, felony evading causing death, and driving under the influence causing bodily injury. Two passengers in Reyes' vehicle sustained serious injuries. Police stated that alcohol and drug impairment are believed to have been contributing factors. The San Bernardino Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team is conducting the independent investigation.
