On 06/16/2026, Columbus Police Department officers attempted to stop a Honda Accord for a traffic violation in Columbus. Police said officers observed suspicious behavior during the stop, and before the stop was complete, the driver drove away at a high rate of speed. A short time later, the vehicle crashed on Alabama Street near Browder Street. Front-seat passenger Christopher Austin Bankhead died at the scene. At least three other occupants were injured, including one person who was airlifted. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation.
