On 06/17/2026, Oregon State Police troopers and Newport Police Department officers went to a property at 1545 Siletz Highway to arrest a man in connection with a bias crime investigation stemming from an incident on June 11 at the intersection of Highway 101 and Highway 229. According to police, officers contacted the man shortly before 4:00 p.m., and he immediately opened fire on them. Officers returned fire, striking him. First responders provided emergency medical care, and he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries. No law enforcement officers or members of the public were injured. The officers who fired their weapons were placed on administrative leave. On June 18, Oregon State Police identified the deceased as 49-year-old Daniel Edward Noonan and said he had been sought on multiple bias crime charges related to the earlier incident. The Lincoln County Major Crimes Team, led by the Lincoln City Police Department, is investigating the shooting with assistance from the Lincoln County District Attorney's Office.
