On 06/18/2026, Hartford Police Department investigators identified Chad Petipas as the suspect in a fatal shooting that occurred the previous evening on Magnolia Street in Hartford, Connecticut. Investigators tracked Petipas to a Motel 6 in West Springfield, Massachusetts, where Hartford police, Holyoke Police Department, and Massachusetts State Police established a perimeter and evacuated the motel. Officers made contact with Petipas and attempted to negotiate his surrender during an hours-long standoff. According to Hartford police, Petipas refused to surrender and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound before officers entered the room. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hartford shooting left 46-year-old Diana Tirado dead and a second woman wounded. The Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden County District Attorney's Office is investigating the death, while the Hartford Police Department continues investigating the homicide.
