On 06/16/2026, South Bend Police Department officers responded to the 400 block of Corby Boulevard after a 911 caller reported that an unwanted person who was the subject of an active protective order was outside the residence with a firearm. Officers located 35-year-old Jujaun Bates, who exited a vehicle carrying a gun. Police attempted to detain him over several blocks and used less-lethal tactics before shots were fired. Multiple Mishawaka Police Department officers discharged their weapons, striking Bates. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. Authorities have not stated who fired first, and no officers were injured. The Indiana State Police are investigating the shooting.
