On 06/15/2026, California Highway Patrol officers attempted to stop a vehicle driven by 20-year-old Zachariah Noble. Noble did not stop and continued driving, leading officers on a pursuit through Modesto. During the pursuit, Noble lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway, and crashed into a residence on Sherwood Avenue. The home was being watched by 73-year-old Carla Zepeda, who was asleep inside at the time of the crash. Zepeda sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead. Noble was arrested and booked on charges including second-degree murder, driving under the influence, evading law enforcement, and driving on a suspended license. Family members said Zepeda had planned to donate one of her kidneys to her son, who has end-stage renal disease. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the pursuit and crash.
