On 06/19/2026, officers with the New York Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting multiple gunshots inside a two-story residence at 190 Kosciuszko Street in Brooklyn. According to police, officers encountered 48-year-old Lamin Simmons, who was armed with a handgun inside the residence. Simmons remained barricaded inside for approximately three hours while specialized Emergency Service Unit officers and hostage negotiators responded. During the standoff, Simmons allegedly fired numerous rounds at officers. At approximately 8:52 a.m., ESU officers entered the residence after negotiations failed. Police reported that Simmons again fired at officers, striking Detective Matthew Gale in the left leg. At least four officers returned fire, striking Simmons. He was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull, where he was pronounced dead. Detective Gale was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the leg and is expected to recover. Two firearms were recovered from the residence. The incident remains under investigation.
