OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 06/19/2026, officers with the Grand Junction Police Department responded to the Dairy Queen at 709 North Avenue after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting that a man armed with a knife had stabbed a customer inside the restaurant. Officers located the man in a vehicle in the parking lot. According to the Mesa County Sheriff's Office, officers fired their weapons during the encounter. The man then drove away, striking another vehicle as he exited the parking lot. He continued westbound before crashing into multiple vehicles near the intersection of North 1st Street and North Avenue, where his vehicle came to a stop. The suspect was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The customer who was stabbed and one motorist injured in the crashes were also transported to hospitals. The Mesa County Coroner's Office has not yet released the man's identity or official cause and manner of death. The 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the incident, and the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave.
