On 06/20/2026, deputies with the Madera County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a man throwing rocks at passing vehicles near Avenue 15 1/2 and Road 31. According to witnesses, the man struck multiple vehicles with rocks and assaulted at least one motorist after forcing the vehicle to stop. Deputies located the man and attempted to take him into custody. During the encounter, deputies fired their weapons, striking the man. Deputies rendered medical aid until emergency personnel arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured. The Madera County Sheriff's Office requested that the Madera County District Attorney's Office lead the investigation, and the California Department of Justice is assisting.
