OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 06/23/2026, officers with the Columbus Police Department responded to a Dollar General on Victory Drive after reports that a store manager had been shot. Police identified the person responsible as 33-year-old Jerome Willis. Officers located Willis near Baker Plaza Drive and attempted to take him into custody. During the encounter, an officer and police K9 Havoc were injured. Officers then shot Willis. He was pronounced dead at the scene. K9 Havoc was airlifted to a veterinary hospital and underwent surgery. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting the investigation.
