On 06/22/2026, officers with the Wayne Police Department responded to the residence of 59-year-old Luciano Vargas after he was identified by investigators as a person of interest in the fatal shooting of 61-year-old Manuel Colon outside The Mews apartment complex on Paterson Plank Road in North Bergen. According to authorities, Vargas barricaded himself inside the residence on Westview Road. The Passaic County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team responded and established a perimeter while negotiators attempted to resolve the situation. After several hours, officers entered the residence and found Vargas dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Prosecutors stated that the death appeared to be a suicide. The incident is being investigated as a domestic dispute.
