On 06/24/2026, officers with the New Madrid Police Department responded to a report of a man with a gun on Blades Drive. According to authorities, the man drove away in an SUV when officers arrived, leading New Madrid Police officers and New Madrid County Sheriff's deputies on a high-speed pursuit to Portageville. A Portageville police officer deployed spike strips on U.S. 61, which the SUV struck. Police reported the vehicle then left the roadway and crashed into a building in the 800 block of North U.S. 61. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by the New Madrid County Coroner. An autopsy was scheduled, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash while the New Madrid County Sheriff's Office is investigating the events preceding the pursuit. The investigation remains ongoing.
