On 06/25/2026, deputies with the Rio Arriba County Sheriff's Office responded to a domestic violence call at a residence on NM-76 in Chimayó. Police stated Derek Torres was intoxicated and armed with a weapon during the encounter. Deputies shot Torres. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The New Mexico State Police are investigating the shooting.
