OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 06/29/2026, a Coweta County Sheriff's Office deputy conducted a traffic stop on an SUV traveling southbound on Interstate 85 in Coweta County. The vehicle came to a stop just across the county line in Meriwether County. During the stop, 64-year-old Dubraye McDaniel spoke with the deputy at the rear of the SUV before suddenly returning to the driver's seat. The deputy attempted to remove McDaniel from the vehicle as a second deputy arrived. Deputies deployed a Taser, but it was ineffective. McDaniel then produced a handgun from beneath the driver's seat and fired multiple shots at the deputies. The deputies returned fire, striking McDaniel multiple times. Coweta County Fire Rescue personnel attempted life-saving measures, but McDaniel was pronounced dead at the scene. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the fatal shooting.
