OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/01/2026, Bruce Charles Thomas was shot and killed during an encounter with officers responding to a reported family disturbance at a residence in the 3200 block of North 84th Place in Kansas City, Kansas. According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, officers arrived after a 911 caller reported that a family member was threatening them and had assaulted them, causing minor injuries. Police attempted to arrest Thomas inside the residence, but he ran upstairs. He later came out of a room holding a knife and moved toward the officers. One officer fired, striking Thomas. Officers provided medical aid, but Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.
