On 07/01/2026, Gregory Thompson was shot and killed during an encounter with deputies at Sonny's Convenience Store on the 1100 block of Boone Hill Road in Summerville, South Carolina. Deputies were attempting to arrest Thompson on outstanding warrants when he fled into the convenience store. According to the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office, Thompson emerged from the store armed with a knife and moved toward deputies. At least one deputy fired, striking Thompson. Deputies rendered aid until EMS arrived, but Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene. The Dorchester County Coroner later identified the decedent as 32-year-old Gregory Thompson. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.
