On 07/01/2026, a man died while in police custody following a single-vehicle crash in Greenbelt, Maryland. According to the Maryland Office of the Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division, United States Park Police requested assistance from the Greenbelt Police Department after the vehicle left the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and crashed into a wooded area along Southway. Before Greenbelt officers arrived, U.S. Park Police had handcuffed the driver and escorted him from the wooded area to the roadway. While in custody, the man became unresponsive. Officers rendered assistance until Prince George's County Fire & EMS personnel arrived and transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An infant found in the vehicle was not injured. The Maryland Office of the Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division is investigating the death.
