OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/03/2026, Darius Chappell died while in custody at the Montgomery County Jail in Clarksville, Tennessee. Chappell had been arrested several days earlier during an incident in front of a Dutch Bros. coffee shop in which Clarksville Police officers assisted Montgomery County Sheriff's deputies. Video of the arrest shows Chappell being tased, forced to the ground, restrained by officers, and extensively bitten by a police K-9 for nearly one minute before the dog was forcibly removed. Following public release of the video, the Clarksville Police Department placed the K-9 officer on administrative leave and opened an internal use-of-force investigation. At approximately 3:00 a.m. on 07/03/2026, jail staff found Chappell unresponsive during a routine security check. EMS transported him to Vanderbilt University Medical Center–Clarksville, where he was pronounced dead. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office conducted a preliminary investigation before turning the case over to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at the request of the 19th Judicial District Attorney General, which is conducting an independent investigation into the in-custody death.
