OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 06/29/2026, officers with the Clarksville Police Department and Montgomery County Sheriff's Office arrested 34-year-old Darius Chappell on an outstanding domestic violence warrant near Fort Campbell Boulevard in Clarksville. During the arrest, officers attempted to restrain Chappell after a physical struggle. Police deployed a conducted energy weapon, and a K-9 was released, biting Chappell as officers placed him in handcuffs. Video recorded by a bystander captured portions of the encounter.
After the arrest, Chappell was transported to the Montgomery County Jail. Four days later, on 07/03/2026, he was found unresponsive in his cell and was pronounced dead. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is conducting the independent investigation into both the arrest and the in-custody death. The official cause and manner of death had not been released at the time of reporting.
Following public release of the arrest video, Chappell's family questioned the level of force used during the arrest and called for accountability. Clarksville Police later identified the officer who handled the K-9, and the department stated that its use-of-force policies and the officers' actions remain under review.
