On 07/03/2026, a man died by suicide during a police standoff on North Carolina Highway 43 near Grifton Hugo Road in the Chicod community of Pitt County, North Carolina. According to the Pitt County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded after receiving reports that an armed man was threatening another person. The man fled the scene in a vehicle, leading deputies on a pursuit before stopping on Highway 43. He remained inside his vehicle for several hours while deputies attempted to negotiate with him. During the standoff, the man died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. No law enforcement officers fired their weapons. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was requested to assist with the investigation.
