OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/01/2026, Edward Pyne died by suicide during a police standoff on Interstate 495 near mile marker 91 in Lowell, Massachusetts. Earlier that afternoon, authorities allege Pyne fatally shot 35-year-old Nicholas Ferreira multiple times in the parking lot of the Highland Commons shopping center in Berlin, Massachusetts. A witness followed Pyne's vehicle after it left the scene, allowing Massachusetts State Police to locate and stop it on Interstate 495. The highway was shut down for several hours while crisis negotiators, the State Police Special Tactical Operations Team, bomb technicians, drones, and a robotic vehicle were deployed. After officers broke the vehicle's windows with less-lethal munitions, a drone was used to inspect the interior and found Pyne dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities stated that no law enforcement officers fired their weapons. Investigators said Pyne and Ferreira knew each other, but a motive has not been released.
