OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/04/2026 at approximately 8:30 a.m., a Greenville County Sheriff’s Office deputy saw a Hyundai Sonata driven by James Noah Moffitt speeding near Lily Street and Lora Lane. The Hyundai was traveling in the opposite direction, and the deputy turned around to initiate a traffic stop. Moffitt continued driving before the deputy could catch up to him.
Moffitt crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a southbound Ford F-150 driven by James Madison Garrett, 54, of Greenville. Emergency personnel transported Garrett to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Moffitt left the crash scene on foot and was subsequently arrested. The South Carolina Highway Patrol charged him with felony DUI involving death, failure to stop involving death, and simple possession of marijuana. A judge denied him bond.
