OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/03/2026, Stephen Griego, 41, was shot and killed by Albuquerque police after officers responded to reports of gunfire near Central Avenue NW and 3rd Street NW in downtown Albuquerque. According to police, officers heard gunshots shortly before midnight and ran toward an altercation between two men. Police said Griego was armed and fired shots toward responding officers. Four officers returned fire, striking him. Officers took Griego into custody and rendered first aid until Albuquerque Fire Rescue arrived. He was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. A second man suffered gunshot wounds during the incident and survived. The Multi-Agency Task Force is investigating. The names of the four involved officers have not been released.
