OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/19/2026 at approximately 10:45 p.m., Albuquerque Police Department officers assigned to the Downtown Action Team heard gunfire near Central Avenue and 3rd Street NW. Witnesses directed officers toward 41-year-old Stephen Griego, who was armed with a handgun. Officers confronted Griego and ordered him to drop the weapon. According to APD, Griego instead pointed the handgun toward officers, who fired their weapons, striking him. Officers rendered medical aid until Albuquerque Fire Rescue personnel arrived. Griego was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
During a subsequent news briefing, APD Chief Cecily Barker said investigators determined Griego had shot two men before officers encountered him. One victim was found critically wounded and transported to a hospital. The second victim suffered a gunshot wound that was not believed to be life-threatening. A bystander was also struck by gunfire during the incident and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Detectives stated the evidence indicated the bystander was struck by a round fired by Griego rather than by police.
APD stated four officers fired their weapons during the encounter. The department has not publicly released the identities of the involved officers. Investigators recovered a handgun from the scene that police identified as the weapon carried by Griego. APD released body-worn camera footage, surveillance video, and a detailed case briefing as part of its Critical Incident Review process.
The Multi-Agency Task Force is conducting the criminal investigation into the shooting. APD's Internal Affairs Force Division is conducting a separate administrative investigation. As of the latest available information, no officer names, prosecutor findings, or civil litigation related to the shooting have been publicly released.
