On 07/05/2026, Tyrin Johnson, 20, was shot and killed during a foot pursuit involving Memphis Police officers and Tennessee National Guard soldiers assigned to the Memphis Safe Task Force. Officers responded shortly before 4:00 a.m. to reports of shots fired near Ida B. Wells Avenue and Gayoso Avenue in downtown Memphis. Police said officers observed Johnson carrying a handgun and pursued him on foot with assistance from National Guard personnel. During the pursuit, two National Guard soldiers fired their weapons, striking Johnson. National Guard medical personnel rendered first aid, but Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is conducting the investigation into the shooting.
