On 07/05/2026, Brandon Fazekas, 39, was shot and killed during an exchange of gunfire with responding law enforcement after officers answered a 911 call reporting a break-in and shots fired at a residence in Rittman, Ohio. Officers came under immediate gunfire upon arrival. Rittman Police Sergeant Scott Ries was killed during the incident, four additional officers were wounded, and a police K-9 was shot. Authorities have not yet released additional details regarding the circumstances of Fazekas' death. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating.
