OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/04/2026 at approximately 1:20 a.m., a Lakewood Police Department officer observed a red Dodge Challenger traveling westbound on South 74th Street at a very high rate of speed. The officer activated the patrol vehicle's emergency lights and siren and attempted to stop the vehicle. Before the officer could catch up, the Challenger continued driving away at a high rate of speed.
The Challenger crossed multiple lanes of traffic near South Tacoma Way and crashed into a power pole and railroad crossing equipment. The impact ejected both the driver and passenger from the vehicle. The vehicle immediately caught fire, and fireworks inside the vehicle began exploding, preventing first responders from immediately determining whether anyone remained inside the burning car. Officers later determined that both occupants had been ejected and had died at the scene.
Because the collision occurred within Tacoma city limits, the Tacoma Police Department assumed responsibility for the crash investigation. Lakewood Police Department Sgt. Charles Porche stated that investigators had not determined whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash. Authorities had not publicly identified either occupant.
