On 07/05/2026, Sacramento County Sheriff's Office deputies responded after a woman reported that she had escaped from several days of alleged domestic violence. She told deputies that her former husband, William Mattias Kreuzer, had assaulted her over multiple days, including choking and striking her with a handgun, and that he was likely armed.
Deputies located Kreuzer's vehicle, and a vehicle pursuit followed onto Interstate 80 near Antelope Road. The pursuit ended on the freeway. According to the sheriff's office, Kreuzer exited or was confronted after the vehicle stopped and pointed a handgun at deputies. Deputies opened fire, striking him.
Deputies rendered medical aid until emergency medical personnel arrived, but Kreuzer was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sacramento County Coroner later identified him as William Mattias Kreuzer, 38, of Rancho Cordova. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office stated the investigation remains ongoing, and the California Department of Justice is conducting the required independent review of the fatal police shooting.
