OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/05/2026 at approximately 1:20 a.m., Hampton Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting near Ocean Boulevard during the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Investigators determined that Tyshawn Cooper, 21, shot a 23-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman without provocation while they were walking in the Hampton Beach area. Both victims sustained serious gunshot wounds and were transported to hospitals.
Officers quickly located Cooper near the intersection of P Street and Ashworth Avenue. According to the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office, officers confronted Cooper and ordered him to stop. During the encounter, Cooper produced a handgun, raised it, and shot himself in the head at essentially the same time an officer fired a single round. Cooper died at the scene. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later determined his cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound and ruled the manner of death suicide.
The New Hampshire Attorney General's Office, New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit, and Hampton Police Department conducted a joint investigation. Investigators recovered the handgun, processed multiple crime scenes, interviewed numerous witnesses, reviewed surveillance video and officer body-worn camera recordings, and completed forensic examinations. The Attorney General's Office concluded that the officer discharged one round but that Cooper's fatal injury resulted from his own gunshot.
Subsequent investigation identified Cooper as an active-duty U.S. Navy sailor stationed in the region. Investigators found no known relationship between Cooper and either victim, and authorities described the shootings as an apparently random act of violence. Both surviving victims were later released from the hospital while continuing their recovery.
