OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/07/2026 at approximately 12:00 p.m., Seminole County Sheriff's Office deputies attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Marquaious Wheaton, who was suspected of trafficking fentanyl. Rather than engaging in a ground pursuit, deputies discontinued the attempted stop because of public safety concerns and monitored the vehicle using the Sheriff's Office Aviation Unit.
Investigators stated Wheaton drove south on U.S. Highway 17-92 at speeds exceeding 100 mph. Near Triplet Lake Drive, his vehicle crossed into traffic and violently struck another vehicle occupied by brothers Christopher Marier, 42, and Tyler Marier, 40. The impact destroyed both vehicles and ignited a fire. Christopher Marier died at the scene.
Christopher Marier was an assistant professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Central Florida. The university released a statement recognizing his contributions to students and the department following his death.
The Seminole County Sheriff's Office arrested Wheaton after the crash. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, trafficking fentanyl, fleeing and eluding law enforcement, and additional felony offenses. The Florida Highway Patrol and Seminole County Sheriff's Office continue investigating the collision.
