OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/07/2026, deputies with the Seneca County Sheriff's Office and officers from the Bloomville Police Department attempted to arrest Jeffrey R. Sergent, 43, of Bloomville on felony domestic violence charges. Officers located Sergent driving a pickup truck and attempted a traffic stop. Sergent continued driving until officers blocked his vehicle at the intersection of Township Road 8 and State Route 67.
Officers spent approximately ten minutes attempting to persuade Sergent to exit the truck and surrender. During the standoff, Sergent removed several knives from his pockets while remaining inside the vehicle, rolled up the windows, and stopped communicating with officers. Additional deputies arrived and positioned patrol vehicles to contain the truck.
According to the Sheriff's Office, Sergent then shifted the truck into reverse in an unsuccessful attempt to escape because a Bloomville police cruiser blocked his path. He immediately shifted into drive while deputies remained in front of and beside the truck. Multiple deputies fired into the vehicle, striking Sergent before the truck could move through the officers' positions. Sergent died at the scene.
The Seneca County Coroner determined Sergent sustained gunshot wounds to the head and arm. The final autopsy report and toxicology findings remained pending at the time of the latest public update. One deputy sustained a hand injury from shattered vehicle glass during the shooting.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation assumed the independent investigation into the shooting. On July 13, 2026, Sheriff Fredrick Stevens released selected body-worn camera footage from the encounter. The deputies who fired their weapons were placed on administrative leave pending completion of the investigation. Their identities had not been publicly released.
