OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/07/2026, an Alaska State Trooper attempted to stop a Ford sedan for equipment violations near Noble Street and Airport Way in Fairbanks. The driver, Thomas Aquino, 20, continued driving, and a pursuit was initiated. The pursuit lasted approximately 90 seconds before Aquino drove onto a dead-end road in the 100 block of 5th Avenue, where his vehicle was partially blocked by a marked trooper vehicle. According to Alaska State Troopers, Aquino then drove toward a uniformed trooper who was giving commands outside the patrol vehicle. The trooper fired at Aquino, striking him. Aquino was transported to a Fairbanks hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A handgun was recovered at the scene. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is conducting the investigation, which will be independently reviewed by the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions.
