OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/07/2026 at approximately 1:30 p.m., Alaska State Troopers attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Thomas Aquino, 20, in Fairbanks. Aquino continued driving away while troopers pursued through the city before the pursuit ended on the Johansen Expressway near College Road.
After the vehicle came to a stop, troopers contacted Aquino. According to the Alaska Department of Public Safety, Aquino was armed with a handgun during the encounter. Troopers fired their weapons, striking Aquino. He died at the scene. Investigators recovered a handgun during the investigation.
The Alaska Bureau of Investigation assumed responsibility for the officer-involved shooting investigation. Investigators processed the scene, documented the pursuit, collected physical evidence, interviewed witnesses, and reviewed available recordings. Upon completion, the investigation will be forwarded to the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions for independent review.
