OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/06/2026, Philadelphia Police Department officers responded to the area outside St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in the 1600 block of West Erie Avenue after reports of gunfire. According to investigators, Joseph Smithers, 32, shot a Philadelphia police officer who was outside the hospital. Additional officers responded and fired at Smithers, striking him multiple times. Smithers was transported to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The wounded officer was hospitalized in stable condition. The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation Unit is investigating the fatal shooting.
