OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/08/2026 at approximately 10:30 a.m., members of the Drug Enforcement Administration assigned to the Memphis Safe Task Force responded to the Extended Stay America hotel near Poplar Avenue and Aaron Brenner Drive to serve a drug-related arrest warrant on Alfonso Ivy, 47. The Memphis Safe Task Force is a multi-agency initiative that includes federal, state, and local law enforcement personnel.
Task force members surrounded Ivy's hotel room and attempted to take him into custody. According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Marshals Service, the situation escalated as officers made entry into the room. Authorities stated Ivy pointed a handgun at the agents during the attempted arrest. A DEA agent fired, striking Ivy. He died at the scene. Investigators recovered a handgun inside the hotel room.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was requested by Shelby County District Attorney General Steve Mulroy to conduct an independent investigation into the shooting. TBI crime scene investigators processed the hotel room, collected physical evidence, interviewed participating officers and witnesses, and reviewed available body-worn camera and other evidence. TBI later identified the decedent as Alfonso Ivy, 47, on July 9 after notification of next of kin.
The shooting occurred four days after another fatal Memphis Safe Task Force shooting involving Tennessee National Guard personnel, making it the second fatal use of force involving the task force within a week and the fourth fatal shooting connected to the task force since its creation. The incident drew renewed public scrutiny of the federally supported task force and prompted additional calls for transparency regarding its operations and use of force.
The TBI will submit its completed investigative findings to the Shelby County District Attorney General's Office for review upon completion of the investigation.
