OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/07/2026, Sioux Falls Police Department officers responded to the 3200 block of East 20th Street to conduct a welfare check. According to investigators, after officers arrived at the residence, James Meyer, 55, opened fire on them, striking one officer. Officers returned fire, striking Meyer. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The wounded officer was transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is conducting the investigation with assistance from the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office. The findings will be submitted to the South Dakota Attorney General for review.
