OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/07/2026 at approximately 10:00 p.m., officers with the Sioux Falls Police Department responded to a residence in the 3200 block of East 20th Street to conduct a welfare check after concerns were reported about the occupant. When officers arrived and attempted to make contact, they were met with gunfire from inside the residence.
According to the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, James R. Meyer, 55, opened fire on the responding officers, striking one Sioux Falls police officer. The wounded officer was transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Officers returned fire, striking Meyer. He died at the scene.
The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation assumed responsibility for the officer-involved shooting investigation at the request of the Sioux Falls Police Department. Investigators processed the residence, collected firearms evidence, documented the scene, interviewed responding officers and civilian witnesses, and reviewed available body-worn camera and other evidence. Responding agencies included the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office and the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
Upon completion of the investigation, the Division of Criminal Investigation will submit its findings and shooting summary to the South Dakota Attorney General's Office for review of the officers' use of deadly force.
