OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/01/2026, Gulfport Police Department officers responded after Malcolm Matthews, 39, allegedly fired shots outside the Gulfport Police substation at the Orange Grove Community Center. Matthews continued driving in a U-Haul van, and Gulfport officers initiated but then terminated a pursuit. A short time later, Biloxi Police Department officers located the van and attempted a traffic stop. Matthews continued driving, leading officers on a pursuit along Highway 90 that ended at the West Biloxi Boat Launch. According to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Matthews fired at officers after the pursuit ended. Officers returned fire, striking Matthews. He was transported to USA Medical Center in Mobile, Alabama, where he died on 07/03/2026 from multiple gunshot wounds. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is conducting the investigation, and its findings will be presented to the Mississippi Attorney General's Office for review.
