On 07/11/2026, Omaha police officers responded to a residence near 55th and Pine Streets in Omaha, Nebraska, to conduct a welfare check on a reportedly suicidal person after a 911 caller requested assistance. According to police, three uniformed officers approached the home and knocked on the door. Police stated that shots were fired from inside the residence toward the officers. Officers took cover, and police reported that David A. Asbury Jr., 44, then came to the doorway and fired additional shots. One officer returned fire, striking Asbury, who fell inside the front doorway. Additional officers, including a K-9 unit, cleared the residence. Asbury was pronounced dead at the scene. A firearm was recovered next to him. The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave, and the shooting will be reviewed by a grand jury as required under Nebraska law.
