OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/10/2026, Kalamazoo County Sheriff's deputies responded to a residence on East Augusta Drive in Ross Township after a woman reported that a 36-year-old man had pointed a firearm at her earlier in the day. Deputies encountered the man's father, who said his son appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis. The man briefly exited the residence, then returned inside and fired multiple rounds from a rifle at deputies. Deputies returned fire and established a perimeter. During the approximately 10-hour standoff, negotiators worked to secure a peaceful surrender while at least three other people inside the home were safely removed. The man later fired additional rounds from an upstairs bedroom window toward officers, who again returned fire. After the Kalamazoo Metro SWAT Team entered the home, the man was found with a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead despite life-saving efforts. Investigators have not yet determined whether he was killed by deputies' gunfire or died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Michigan State Police is investigating the incident, and the involved deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave.
