OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/10/2026 at approximately 4:30 p.m., Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a residence on East Augusta Drive after a woman reported that Roger Zebrowski, 36, had pointed a firearm at her earlier in the day. Deputies met Zebrowski's father, who reported that his son was experiencing a mental health crisis. Zebrowski briefly came outside, yelled at deputies, and returned inside the residence.
Deputies established a perimeter after learning that at least four people remained inside the residence. Zebrowski fired a rifle multiple times at deputies, who returned fire while taking cover. Negotiators from the Kalamazoo Metro Hostage Negotiation Team spent approximately 10 hours attempting to secure a peaceful surrender while officers safely removed family members from the home. Officers also used less-lethal tactics during the negotiations.
Later in the standoff, Zebrowski fired additional rounds from an upstairs bedroom window toward officers. Deputies again returned fire. Officers entered the residence after the exchange and found Zebrowski with a fatal gunshot wound. Authorities stated they were awaiting autopsy findings to determine whether he died from police gunfire or a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Ross Township Police Chief Martin Brown stated that Zebrowski had a history of mental illness and that Ross Township police and Kalamazoo County sheriff's deputies had previously responded to the residence for similar mental health incidents. Michigan State Police assumed responsibility for the criminal investigation. Five members of the Kalamazoo Metro SWAT Team and three Kalamazoo County sheriff's deputies who fired their weapons were placed on paid administrative leave. Agencies assisting at the scene included the Augusta Village Police Department, Richland Village Police Department, Ross Augusta Fire Department, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, Portage Department of Public Safety, and Michigan State Police.
