OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/06/2026 at approximately 5:00 a.m., Peterborough Police Department officers responded to a residence on Union Street after receiving reports of an altercation involving an off-duty police officer. Responding officers found Jack Hutchings, 24, outside the residence suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. An off-duty police officer was also found with multiple stab wounds.
According to the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office, the preliminary investigation determined Hutchings stabbed the off-duty officer during the confrontation. A responding on-duty Peterborough police officer encountered Hutchings outside the residence and fired his service weapon, striking him. Hutchings died at the scene. The off-duty officer was transported to a hospital with serious injuries and was later reported to be in stable condition.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined Hutchings died from multiple gunshot wounds and ruled the manner of death homicide. The New Hampshire Attorney General's Office, the New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit, and the New Hampshire State Police Crime Scene Unit assumed the investigation into both the fatal shooting and the stabbing. Investigators processed the residence, collected physical evidence, interviewed witnesses, and reviewed available evidence from the scene.
The Attorney General's Office identified the decedent as Jack Hutchings, 24, of Peterborough, after notification of next of kin. The identity of the involved Peterborough police officer has not been publicly released. The investigation into the officer's use of deadly force remains ongoing and will follow New Hampshire's standard review process for police shootings.
